In a treatment room at Siam Soul in Orakei, the session begins before the hands make their first contact. A warm, layered fragrance fills the air — lemongrass, kaffir lime, turmeric — rising from steamed cloth bundles resting nearby. This is luk pra kob, and its ritual begins the moment you breathe it in.

What is luk pra kob?

Luk pra kob (ลูกประคบ) translates as "herbal compress ball." It is one of the oldest healing tools in traditional Thai medicine, used in temples and village healing practices for centuries. Each compress is a tightly wrapped cloth bundle packed with a blend of Thai medicinal herbs, steamed until fragrant, then pressed and rolled rhythmically along the body's energy pathways.

The herbs are selected for their specific properties. Lemongrass stimulates circulation and reduces surface inflammation. Kaffir lime leaf calms muscle tension and lifts the senses. Turmeric, one of the most studied plants in traditional medicine, warms the tissue from within and supports recovery. Together, they work through a combination of heat, pressure and the active compounds released by the steam.

Why do we pair it with Thai massage?

At Siam Soul, luk pra kob is offered as part of our Signature Ritual: a full Thai massage followed by the herbal compress. The sequence is intentional.

Thai massage opens the body's energy pathways first, releasing surface tension and warming the outer layers of muscle. When the compress follows, the tissue is already soft and receptive. The steamed bundles press therapeutic heat and herbal compounds deeper than hands alone can reach. What the massage softens, the compress penetrates. The result is a release that neither treatment could achieve on its own.

What does it feel like?

The warmth comes first, gentle and penetrating. Then the fragrance deepens as the compress releases more of its oils with each press. The scent of lemongrass fills the room, then settles into something quieter, warmer. Most people notice their breathing slow within the first few minutes. By the end, the tightness they arrived with tends to stay in the room.

Is luk pra kob right for you?

It is particularly well suited to those carrying chronic muscle tension, people whose bodies run cold, and anyone who needs more than surface-level relaxation. The herbs and heat do much of the work. Your role is simply to receive it.

We offer luk pra kob as part of our Signature Ritual at Siam Soul in Orakei, Auckland. Our compresses are made in-house to a family recipe — the same blend we have used since we opened in 2016. Come in and experience the difference the right herbs, applied with the right hands, can make.
